Biography
Guillem Femenias Nadal was born in Petra, Spain, in 1963. He received the Telecommunication Engineer degree and the Ph.D. degree in telecommunications from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1987 and 1991, respectively.
From 1987 to 1994, he was a Researcher with UPC, where he became an Associate Professor in 1990. Since 1995, he was an Associate Professor with the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB), Mallorca, Spain, where he became Full Professor in 2010 and is currently the Leader of the Mobile Communications Group. He has been the Project Manager of projects ARAMIS, DREAMS, DARWIN, MARIMBA, and COSMOS, all of which being funded by the Spanish and Balearic Islands Governments. In the past, he was also involved with several European projects (ATDMA, CODIT, and COST). His current research interests and activities span the fields of digital communications theory and wireless personal communication systems, with particular emphasis on multiple-input–multiple-output cross-layer design in radio resource management strategies applied to fourth-generation systems.
Dr. Femenias is a corecipient of the Best Paper Award at the 2007 IFIP International Conference on PersonalWireless Communications. He has served for various IEEE conferences as a Technical Program Committee Member and as the Publications Chair for the IEEE 69th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC-Spring 2009).

In these systems, scheduling and resource allocation algorithms, jointly assigning transmission data rates, bandwidth and power, become crucial to optimize the resource utilization while providing support to multimedia applications with heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this article, a unified framework for channeland queue-aware QoS-guaranteed cross-layer scheduling and resource allocation algorithms for heterogeneous multiservice OFDMA wireless networks is presented. The framework encompasses different types of traffic, uniform and continuous power allocation, discrete and continuous rate allocation, and protocols with different amounts of channel- and queue-awareness. System parameters and QoS requirements are projected into utility functions and the optimization problem is then formulated as a constrained utility maximization problem. Optimal solutions for this problem are obtained for the uniform power allocation schemes, and novel quasioptimal algorithms are proposed for the adaptive power allocation strategies. Remarkably, these techniques exhibit complexities that are linear in the number of resource units and users. Simulation results demonstrate the validity and merits of the proposed cross-layer unified approach.},
